Sheikh Sa’id Al-Maktoum House

Near the mouth of the Bay on the Shindaga peninsula conveniently located Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum house, that was built in 1896. The building is a traditional house of Dubai’s.

For local residents the house has a special meaning – it was built by grandfather of the current leader of Dubai. Sheikh Saeed lived here until his death in 1958.

In this house consisting of thirty rooms, respecting the old Arab traditions, were lived different generations of Maktoum family.

Carefully restored house has acquired the status of the museum in 1986. In areas of the building presented several exhibits, each of which tells about a specific topic in the past of Dubai. The building provides a visible representation of how Dubai looked in the past. According to Arab tradition, the tour goes from right to left.

There is a library at the right side of the entrance. A certain number of rooms in the right wing of the house dedicated to the history of Dubai, which is represented by photographs of various years of its existence. Quite a few images taken from an airplane. There is a room devoted to the marine life of the Gulf. Showcase, located in the hall to the right of the entrance, tells the story of pearling. Exhibits pearls presented on the background cloth, embroidered with markings to make small pearls counted. Here are old photos showing the construction of dhows and pearl miners during their work. These color photos are actually skillfully colorized black-and-white pictures.

Hall, located opposite, is devoted to sixties and the beginning of the oil era.

Photos from Maktoum family archives, are exhibited in the Maktoum hall. Many of the scenes shown in the photo, are very alive. Completes the exhibition photos of the Dec. 2, 1971 event – Declaration of the United Arab Emirates – a country in Western Asia located on the south-east of the Arabian Peninsula.

Also, there are a numismatic hall in museum, where you can see a small collection of old coins.

Museum operation hours:
Monday – Thursday, Saturday – Sunday from 8.30 to 19.30
On Friday from 13.30 to 19.30.
