Dubai as well as any other big city has a huge number of car rentals. The choice of cars is also very large – from a small Toyota Echo up to huge bus with driver. Also, some car rentals offer top sport cars for rent.
There are two types of car rental companies in the United Arabian Emirates:
Multinational companies, such as “Avis Rent a Car”, “Budget Car Rental”, “Thrifty Car Rental”, “Fast Rent a Car”, “Sixt Rent a Car” and some others.
And of course a lot of local private companies. All of them impossible to list, here are just some of them: “Sadaf Rent a Car”, “Samra Rent a Car” and others.
There are several fundamental differences between these two types of car rental companies.
First: Documents you will require to rent a car. Multinational companies require a minimum of two documents: a valid driving license in the UAE, and a credit card.
Please make sure your driving license is valid in the UAE! The police wont pay attention to the validity of your driver license, but only so long as nothing has happened. Problems will begin when a car accident occurs by your fault. That’s why big companies do not agree to accept not valid in UAE driver licenses. There is a way – at your request, these companies can for the extra money make a temporary international standard driver license, valid in the UAE.
In a private local car rental company requirements for documents are not so strong. Typically they asked only to show (and make a copy) driver’s license and to leave the original of your passport as a pledge.
Second: Method of payment for car rent. Multinational companies prefer credit cards. So, you not only pay for the car rental, but also provide a pledge in case of fines or other undesirable situations. That why many large companies are asked not just a credit card, but gold. Those who are not fortunate enough to become the owner of a gold credit card are sometimes denied to rent a car.
Private local companies accepts only cash. In this case, as a pledge serves your own passport.
Third: Selection of car models to rent. Multinational companies offer: from Toyota Tercel or Echo for $ 45 per day, to Jaguar XJ8 for $ 600 per day of luxury life. In private companies the selection is much more modest: one – two models. One of cheap class, such as Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sunny, Honda Civic, and one of more expensive class – Toyota Camry, Nissn Maxima or Honda Accord.
Fourth: Car rental prices.
Multinational companies:
Toyota Echo – $ 45
Toyota Corolla – $ 60
Toyota Camry – $ 90
Nissan Maxima – $ 110
Chevrolet Caprice – $ 150
Mersedes Benz E-200 – $ 300
Mersedes Benz S-320 or Jaguar XJ8 – $ 600
Sometimes you can successfully get to the promotions, during which you can take the car cheaper.
Private local companies: Super low prices, flexible discount system, the possibility to not pay for full insurance.
Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sunny, Honda Civic – $ 30-35
Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima, Honda Accord – $ 45-50
Also they offer additional discount for not new car rental. In term of more than a week – even cheaper. In term of the month – almost free. For example – the new Honda Civic for a month costs about $ 600 ($ 20 per day).
Fifth: Car rental insurance. There are two types of insurance – CDW and PAI. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) – compensation for accidents (exemption from payment). PAI (Personal Accident Insurance) – personal insurance. Big companies will never rent a car without full insurance. Despite the fact that the rates for CDW and PAI are in separate columns (for marketing purposes) they will always be added to the rent price. CDW ranges from $ 6 to $ 40 per day, and PAI – from $ 3 to $ 5. At private companies, the situation is different – usually they offer a car without full insurance, but if you want, you can pay extra money and get the CDW.
Sixth: Petrol. Large companies are offering cars with a full tank and require the full tank when you will return it. Private companies offer a car with fueling type of “how much is left from the previous rent”. But no less than 5 liters in the tank. Returning the car you should also follow this principle.
Conclusion: If you are not constrained by limited finances, if you have a reliable bank account and if you like variety – you should rent a car in big companies. If you’re owner of not valid in UAE driver license and cash in your pocket is melting at an alarming rate – you should go to the private local company.
And few more words about the car rental: All companies do not rent a car to people under 21 years, expensive cars – to people under 25 years. Do not drive a car drunked!
If, car rental company has written off an amount of fines from your deposit and you do not agree with that, then you can check your fines out on the Dubai Police website . Be careful driving!
